Faith Deconstruction and Religious Trauma
Faith is a complex and intricate part of the human experience for a lot of people. When there are changes, crisis, and/or deconstruction of one’s faith, it can be a lot to sort out. For some people it comes with recognizing religious trauma that occurred. For others it means losing a community. When issues related to faith arise, it can cause depression, anxiety, and even traumatic symptoms. I provide a safe, validating, genuine environment to explore questions of faith and how to reconstruct your spirituality in a psychologically flexible way.
This approach to therapy is also useful and healing for those who have left high control groups and cults.
While religious traumatic syndrome is not formerly recognized by the DSM (the big book we use to diagnosis people), this is an area that is being increasingly researched and understood. If you are experiencing symptoms that are often attributed to PTSD because of a religious experience (fundamentalism, purity culture, etc), this is something that it is helpful to address and process in therapy.
I experienced specific training in graduate school regarding the integration of spirituality and psychology. I will always ask for your consent before we process spiritual beliefs and symptoms related to spiritual experiences.
